Romania's famous lakes - Red Lake

Red Lake

The Red Lake is a natural lake from Romania and is situated at the foot of Hamasu Mare Mountains, near the town Gheorgheni. The lake is also known as Lake Ghilcoș. It is a natural dam lake formed following the collapse of a slope due to the earthquake of January 23, 1838, at 18.45. 6.9 magnitude, VIII intensity , at the foot of Hășmașul Mare Mountain, near Bicaz Gorges, at a distance of 26 km from Gheorgheni, in Harghita County.

My first visit to Red Lake was in 2019. My mother was curious to see what a lake that hides many secrets looks like. I learned about Red Lake in high school and I know that it is a lake formed after the collapse of a slope due to the earthquake of January 23, 1838. What I remember was that it was also called the killer Lake, because due to landslides a the whole village was covered with earth, killing all the inhabitants and their animals. There was also a pine forest that was flooded by the earthquake. Over time, the trees have petrified and can be seen on the surface of the lake. The red color is due to the corrosion of the Suhard massif. Red Lake is located near the Bicaz Gorges, at a distance of 26 km from Gheorgheni. It is the largest dam lake in Romania.

There, in the lake area, I could hardly find a parking space, you can't even imagine how many tourists there are.The first thing we did was have a picnic. It didn't look like walking along the lake on an empty stomach, did it? After the picnic we went down to the lake which fascinated us with its beauty and uniqueness. I won't tell you too much, I keep a little mystery to make you get here too. I managed to get some pictures to show you too.

Don't you want to get there too?

It's a beautiful place. You can walk along the lake or by boat.
