Bistrita Monastery is a monastery full of history. I visited this monastery for the first time in 2005. In 2020 I wanted to visit it again. It was the end of August and the evening was approaching and we were against time. I knew that on the road between Piatra Neamț and Bicaz Gorges there are some ancient monasteries, so I decided on this occasion to visit the Bistrița Monastery.
The monastery is located very close to Piatra Neamț, only 7-8 km from the city center and less than 2 km from DN 15, access to the monastery is signposted.
The monastery was founded in the first decade of the year 1400 by Alexander the Good. The place of worship is surrounded by stone walls under the vault of an access tower built by Petru Rareș. The current church of the monastery was founded by Alexandru Lăpușneanu in 1554, according to the inscription under the Moldavian coat of arms, on the southern wall.
Bistrița Monastery preserves the icon of Saint Ana, the miracle-working icon. Due to the restrictions I did not enter the church, but when I got home I looked through the old photos and while looking at the photos with this icon I felt that I was there, in the church, in front of the icon of Saint Anne.
Bistrița Monastery from Neamț County is located in the city of Bistrița, Alexandru cel Bun ( Alexander the Good) commune and was built before 1407 (the first documentary certification) by the ruler Alexandru cel Bun of Moldavia (1400-1432). In 1498, Stephen the Great built a bell tower, with a chapel, dedicated to the Holy Martyr John the New of Suceava, with a fresco of great artistic and iconographic value, which is preserved to this day. In 1546, Petru Rareș renovated the monastery and built a wall around it. He also gave him the village of Mojești with all the income he produced. In 1554, Alexandru Lăpușneanu completely renovated the monastery.
Bistrița Monastery is the place where one of the oldest monuments of the Romanian medieval culture was created: Pomelnicul de la Bistrița. This pomelnic offers the most interesting facts about the beginning of the voivodship and the history of the church in Moldova.
Alexander the Good donated the icon of St. Anne to the monastery. The icon of Saint Anne is said to be one of the oldest icons of the voivodship in Romania.
Between 1967 and 1984, extensive general restoration works were carried out in Bistrița, as a result of which the Bistrița Monastery regained a large part of its former appearance.
You certainly did not know that in Romania the most famous churches and monasteries were founded by the rulers of the time. There are most such monasteries in the area of Moldavia. My intention is to make their history as well known as possible. I do not promote religion itself, but the history of these churches and monasteries. They are part of the troubled history of Romania. I hope I made myself understood.
