Romania's famous monasteries - Sucevița Monastery

Sucevița Monastery

After leaving the Putna Monastery, our next direction was to the Sucevița Monastery, founded by the Movileşti families, great boyars, scholars and rulers of Moldavia and Wallachia in the 15th century. XVI-XVII. It is located 19 km southwest of Radauti, on DN 17A. The monastery is a historical monument.

At the entrance we find an information panel located on the right side of the access alley, then I bought a leaflet and I found information that helped me in writing this article.

Sucevița Monastery was built in the style of Moldovan architecture - a combination of Byzantine and Gothic art elements, to which are added architectural elements of the old wooden churches in Moldova, the building, large, retains the trilobed plan and style of the time of Stephen the Great , with the porch closed.

The church of Sucevita Monastery dedicated to the "Resurrection of the Lord" was founded before 1581 by the Movila brothers (Irimia, Simion and Gheorghe Movila).

The massive walls around the church were built after 1595, during the reign of Ieremia Movilă. Each wall is almost 100 meters long, three meters wide and more than six meters high, thus creating the atmosphere of a medieval fortress.

I entered the church dedicated to the "Resurrection of the Lord" and admired the paintings, then I entered the tomb room. Here I could see that on each grave an information plate next to a flower pot. This is how I found out that the tombs covered with marble carved with floral motifs belong to the two main founders of this monastery - Ieremia and Simion Movilă. It has a closed porch, narthex, tomb, nave and altar. The church of Sucevita Monastery is the last in the series of those adorned with exterior painting. The fresco of the monastery (exterior) represents various biblical scenes, from the Nativity to the Resurrection.

We headed back to the monastery courtyard, walked the alleys and managed to film something, then took pictures. While taking photos I saw a sign to the monastery museum, arranged on the east side of the enclosure wall. The museum is upstairs, I climbed a ladder made of solid wood, to the Movileşti Hall, as the museum is called. Here we find one of the richest and most precious collections of medieval art in Moldova.

From Sucevița we headed to the next destination, Moldovița, the serpentines made the view even more beautiful. On the YouTube channel I uploaded a video with the partial route between the two monasteries.
