Romania's famous resorts - Sărata-Monteoru Resort

 Sărata-Monteoru Resor

After visiting the Muddy Volcanoes, our next destination was the Sărata-Monteoru Resort, a resort that occupies a picturesque position, surrounded on all sides by hills.

I will start by writing that the village of Sărata-Monteoru or Monteoru, where the resort is located and is also known for the Monteoru culture, an archaeological culture dating from the Bronze Age, represented by a large settlement near the eastern edge of today's village , on Cetățuia hill.

We did not miss the opportunity to walk in the English park as it was once called, arranged at the request of Grigore Monteoru and completed in 1904 by Dr. Constantin Angelescu, Monteoru's son-in-law. Inside the park I discovered a pool of an artesian well, but also a garden kiosk made of wrought iron and stone blocks. On the outer fence there is a stone plaque on which was written that there was “Fontâna Gr. C. Monteoru. 1890 ”.

The period of glory of the resort was until World War II, being destroyed after the establishment of the communist regime and the confiscation of property.

It was a one-day escape, so it wasn't about staying here for several days, not even splashing in salt water. Here in the resort, there are 2 hotels and guesthouses waiting for those eager to escape from the city. Hotel Ceres located on one side of the Sărata brook is old, renovated and looks very good. The hotel is in the care of the Ministry of Labor and many retirees who come for treatment stay there every year.

On a large information panel, located nearby, we found some data regarding the history of the resort: “The first documentary mention of Sărata-Monteoru dates from 1482 - 1496, in a deed issued by Vlad Călugărul.

Walking there we came to spring number 6 with the following therapeutic recommendations, according to the information displayed above: gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastritis, duodenitis, intestinal dysmicrobism, gallstones, enterocolitis, pancreatitis or acute indigestion.

The Casino Hotel, on the other side of the Sărata brook, can be accessed by crossing the bridge, which ends at the entrance to the reception. In addition to many other facilities, this hotel also has a modern saltwater swimming pool with a capacity of 150 seats.

We also arrived in front of the chapel of the Monteoru family, a historical monument church where the founder of Sărata-Monteoru resort rests with his family members. In the yard, under the shade of the trees, I saw on the fence the funerary monument of his son, Gogu.

I really liked Sărata-Monteoru and I want to come back every year for the salt water from the pool, the clean air and the beautiful landscapes. You can also go hiking in the forest, on marked paths. We limited ourselves to the resort. In addition, there were signs everywhere with the name and direction of the objectives, regardless of their significance.

I noticed that both the town and the resort are closely linked to the salt springs.

For those who do not know Sărata-Monteoru (in short, Monteoru; in the past, Fundul Sărății) is a village in the commune of Merei in Buzău County, Muntenia, Romania. It is a seasonal spa of local interest, and was first known among the locals for the healing waters of the salt springs. It is located in the central-western part of the county, Muntenia, Romania, about 14 km away from Buzau city.

Waters with healing properties have been mentioned since 1837, the locals using them to treat diseases. The Greek Grigore Stavri (who later took the name of Grigore Constantinescu-Monteoru) acquired in 1860–1880 all the oil lands, as well as the whole village then called Fundu Sărății and became rich from the oil business, selling both crude oil, as well as mineral oil manufactured in the distillery opened in 1871.

In the years after the First World War, the Institute of Balneology was established, which in a larger study on mineral waters in Romania, turned its attention to the spring no. 2 from Monteoru. Dr. G. Niculescu found that the spring waters contain sodium chloride and magnesium chloride, but without sodium bicarbonate and that they have a composition similar to those in the French resort of Châtel Guyon. His studies have been published in the Institute's journal and have been presented at various conferences. Based on these data, Dr. A. Theohari established the therapeutic indications of these waters in diseases of the digestive tract and its appendages.

In addition, the tourist program of the area includes many objectives of interest, such as the outdoor sculpture camp from Magura, the muddy volcanoes from Berca, the Ciolanu and Ratesti monasteries, the vineyard and the wineries of the wine resort from Pietroasele, the place where it was discovered the Closca cu Pui de Aur treasure, the amber museum from Colti, etc. Sarata Monteoru Resort is a wonderful place for spa treatment as well as for recreation and hiking.
