After visiting some monasteries, we headed to our original destination, Borsec Resort. Here we found advantages, but also many disadvantages. I do not think there is anyone who has not heard of the Borsec Resort, once famous for its healing waters, called the Queen of Mineral Waters, by the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph.
It is a resort where you will find not only springs with mineral water, but also many interesting buildings, which make this place even more beautiful. You have to visit to understand what I'm saying.
What I especially liked about the resort: the famous well-known springs are beautifully surrounded by wooden gazebos and each has a panel with information about the chemical composition of the water and therapeutic indications.
Borsec resort is located in a beautiful mountainous area (between 850 and 930 meters altitude), in the depression of the same name in the northeast of Harghita county. The town of the same name developed largely due to mineral waters.
The walk started with Aleea 7 Izvoare, the main starting point for walks or hikes in the area. The alley is paved with cubic stone. On the way we met the first springs of mineral water, arranged in the form of gazebos, which give an interesting look to the resort.
I liked the area of the Main Spring or the Elizabeth Spring, a spring named after the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary, also known as Sisi.
For those who want to do tourist routes:
- Fairy Meadow - a magnificent plateau just above the resort
- Bear Cave - narrow canyons, where bears once hibernated
- Ice Cave - accessible cave with ice formations (from the entrance you feel the cold regardless of the season)
- Travertine quarry - travertine is born at the mouth of bicarbonate hot springs, at Borsec there are about 3
- Skunk - here is an ancient spring
- Round Chair Cave - a difficult road, ideal place for climbers
- Owl Fortress - a conglomeration of steep cliffs, here are casemates from the first and second world wars
- Ski slopes - 3 in number
However, I liked what I saw at Borsec and I hope that in the coming years she will return to her former fame, to become the Queen of Mineral Waters again.
The town of Borsec is located in the mountain range of the Eastern Carpathians NW of Harghita County, in a depression located at the interference of the Giurgeu Mountains, Bistrița and Călimani Mountains, at an altitude between 850–950 m.
The Borsec depression has an oval shape and is with a peak oriented to the northeast, being separated from the spur of the Scaunul Rotund hill in two subunits. The locality is composed of two areas that correspond geographically to the two small depression areas that join: Borsecul de Sus and Borsecul de Jos.
At Borsecul de Sus there is the actual resort. Within the resort there are alleys and tourist routes, most of them in the suburbs, especially for visiting the natural monuments in the reservation of the Round Chair and the Făget area (Bükkhavas). They have the necessary facilities to carry out the field cure in appropriate conditions, including tourist markings.
The town owes its reputation to the mineral water resources with rich therapeutic qualities, waters that received the medal of the Vienna International Fair (1873) - Borsec water being called "Queen of Mineral Waters", silver medal and Honorary Diploma at exhibitions organized in 1876 in Berlin and Trieste, respectively, the Honorary Diploma of the Paris Exhibition (1878).
