After visiting the most famous castles and towns, we decided to return to the fortresses and ticked the monumental ensemble "Curtea Domnească" from Târgoviște. The Royal Court represents a complex of medieval buildings and fortifications that had the role of residence of some voivodes of Wallachia and, at the same time, the relatively important point of the country's defensive system.
We reach the most visited tourist attraction in Târgoviște: the monumental complex "
Royal Court" with great emotions, I did not know what we would find there. Unfortunately for us, we got there too early and it wasn't open yet, so we headed to the fortress admiring everything around us. Eventually we found it open and went to the box office.
Here you can visit the ruins of the fortress but also the ancient walls, the Great Royal Church but also the famous Chindia tower from where you can see the entire city of Targoviste. Unfortunately, when we were there, both the church and the tower were to being rebuilt.
An important point in the defense system in Wallachia is the Royal Court in Targoviste, a place full of history. Many voivodes have left their mark here. It seems that the first of them was Mircea cel Bătrân, who in an act from 1417-1418 talks about the city of Târgoviște.
In the 15th century, Alexandru I Aldea and Vlad Dracul, two of Mircea cel Bătrân's sons, fortified the fortress, and his nephew, Vlad Țepeș, made Târgoviște the city with the largest fortifications in the country and built the Chindia Tower. .
I was impressed by the Great Royal Church built in 1584, it is considered to be the largest religious building in the country at that time. Unfortunately, we only have her beauty from the outside. Extensive reconstruction work is underway.
Also here we find what was the princely house built by Mircea the Old, of which today only a few remains of basements of river pebbles are preserved. On the ruins of this house is the probable palace of Vlad Dracul and completed in 1440, much bigger and more beautiful, with 2 m thick walls and a ceremonial hall. In addition to these we find many other remains.
Chindia Tower is a building whose year of construction is unknown. It seems that it was started by Vlad Dracul, Vlad Țepeș's father, but it is believed that the foundation was made during Vlad Țepeș's second reign. The tower is built on the ruins of the chapel founded by Mircea cel Batran, originally considered the oldest in the area, but recent discoveries in 2014, when new jewelry was found in two tombs, strengthen the idea that there was a church built before 1300.
Here can be found other vestiges dating from the second half of the fourteenth century, prior to the reign of Mircea the Elder, now little represented in the museum complex.
For those who do not know, at the beginning of the 14th century, the city of Târgoviște appears in chronicles as the Capital of Wallachia, next to Argeș. Also during this period, the chronicles say that it served as the residence of the voivodeship of Mircea cel Bătrân.
In 1427, in his memoirs, the crusader Hans Schiltberger mentions the city of Târgoviște as the capital of Wallachia, next to Argeș. The crusader Hans Schiltberger took part in the military expedition that ended with the defeat at Nicopolis. But, since this work was published 31 years later, it is assumed that in 1396 the city already had fortifications, like any capital of the time.
In the internal documents, the Royal Court is attested during the time of Mircea cel Bătrân when, in an act of his son and his associate during the reign, Mihail I, dated 1417-1418, it is spoken about „[…] the city of my reign Târgoviște [… ] ”(HR, B, vol.I). From this act it can be understood, at that time, there is a voivodship residence, of course. In fact, archaeological excavations confirm this assumption, dating to the period of Mircea the Elder: a house, the first church-chapel, a curtain and traces of a palisade (lever) of small wood.
