Today I will not write about mountains, waters, castles or monasteries. This day will be dedicated to a small piece of Romanian history. The idea to write about this came from a friend.
When we returned from some of the monasteries we visited, we decided to visit the Mausoleum of the Heroes from Marasesti, after the third attempt. Every time I wanted to visit him I found them closed. I haven't been here since I was a child, although it's not far from Focșani.
The Mausoleum of the Heroes from Marasesti was built in the place where almost 70 thousand soldiers died in the First World War. It is considered the most representative building in the country. It consists of 18 galleries in which the bones of about 5,000 heroes were buried. The mausoleum has inscribed on the main facade: "IN THE GLORY OF THE NATIONAL HEROES", in memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the battles of Marasesti.
On the alley leading to the Mausoleum, we are accompanied by a gallery of bronze busts of the heroes of the First World War, including that of Marshal Alexandru Averescu and Lieutenant Ecaterina Teodoriu. Hitler is said to have been impressed by it and asked Antonescu to send anti-aircraft units to defend the building during World War II. Among the buried we find the name of little Maria Zaharia, the little one of only 12 years old, about whom the history teacher told us how she helped the Romanian army. The interior of the building leaves you breathless, many galleries make you get lost and give you the feeling that you go back in time, where the Romanian army held the German army. Also there is the Central Chapel, where the sarcophagus of General Eremia Grigorescu is located. Although I did not photograph all the crypts, I wanted to visit every corner of the mausoleum.
We left the interior of the mausoleum and visited the 3 superimposed terraces that show the scene of the battle due to the cannons and shells that seem to protect the mausoleum.
In the courtyard of the mausoleum, a museum dedicated to the battles of Marasesti was set up in a separate building containing various personal items that appeared to the heroes who lost their lives.
Not far from the mausoleum is the cemetery of German soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War, which is located on the road of Focșani-Panciu, in the place called "Frunzoaia". I had the opportunity to pass the cemetery on my visit to Soveja Resort.
If you want to see the impressive mausoleum building or the museum I assure you that you will not regret it.
